I probably should’ve let my mom pack my suitcase.
I made the rookie mistake of wearing the wrong shoes on the first day, and my feet paid for it the rest of the week.
As it turns out, the shoes weren’t the only thing my parents got right.

I recently had the opportunity to return to Walt Disney World Resort for a Disney Education Event with fellow travel advisors. I arrived expecting to fill pages of notes about resorts, attractions, and everything new since my last visit.
I left with something much harder to put into words.
It had been more than six years since my last visit, back in March 2020, just before the world seemed to hit pause.

So much had changed.
Yet somehow, the music, the storytelling, and that unmistakable feeling of being there made it feel like I’d never left.
I had, however, conveniently forgotten just how many steps one can take in a single day at Walt Disney World Resort.
Disney sprinkled in experiences that reminded me just how thoughtfully everything is designed. Walking through Disney’s Hollywood Studios before the park officially opened. Watching Luminous: The Symphony of Us from a dessert party. Seeing familiar places from a completely different perspective.
But somewhere along the way, something unexpected happened.
I arrived as a travel advisor.
Somewhere along the way, I became a Guest again.

One of my favorite moments happened during our final training session.
A fellow advisor thanked the Disney team and behind the scenes Cast Members, and shared how much their hospitality had meant throughout the week.
The room grew quiet. A few eyes filled with tears. Mine included.
It was a simple moment, but it reminded me that hospitality isn’t something Disney talks about. It’s something they practice.
As the week went on, I found myself remembering family trips with my parents.
We’d get to the parks early, enjoy the morning, then head back to the resort for a swim and a little downtime before returning in the evening.
As a kid, I never understood why.
Wouldn’t it be better to stay in the parks all day and do everything?
Now? I get it.
Disney isn’t something you conquer. It’s something you experience. The magic grows with you.

Being there also reminded me how different every Disney vacation can be.
Every Disney Resorts Collection hotel has its own personality.
Every family has different priorities.
Every traveler defines “magic” a little differently.
That’s part of what makes planning a Disney vacation so much fun.
By the last day, I was too tired to shop. And if you know me, that’s saying something.
I came home with pages of notes that will absolutely help me become a better Disney travel advisor.
But the lesson I’ll carry with me the longest won’t be found in those notes.
It’ll be in the stories. The hospitality. The people. The music. And the realization that my parents knew exactly what they were doing all along.

Great article Darcy! You captured the magic of the event so nicely :-). I was grateful to run into you again and reconnect – woo hoo – I made your blog pics too!
