For years, every vacation revolved around someone else’s schedule.
School breaks. Sports tournaments. Summer camps.
Then one day…it doesn’t.
The calendar you’ve spent years filling for everyone else suddenly has space.
At first, it can feel a little unfamiliar.
For so long, your days were measured by school pickups, practices, concerts, college visits, and family obligations.
Now, there’s something you may not have had in years.
Choice.
It’s one of the beautiful surprises of becoming an empty nester.
Travel begins to look different, too.
You don’t have to plan around a school calendar anymore.
You can take advantage of quieter seasons, linger over breakfast at a charming café, or spend an afternoon watching the waves without wondering who needs to be somewhere next.
The trip no longer has to keep everyone entertained.
It only has to make you happy.
One of my favorite conversations is with couples who tell me, “We haven’t planned a vacation that’s just for us in years.”
Now it’s finally their turn.
They’re slowing down. Taking the scenic route. Staying one more night because they can.
Finding joy in the simple moments that once would’ve felt impossible to fit into a busy family schedule.
Maybe this chapter isn’t about filling your calendar again.
Maybe it’s about filling it with the things you’ve been waiting for.
The places you’ve always wanted to see.
The experiences you’ve been saving for “someday.”
Because maybe this is the season to stop saying, “One day.”
And simply choose a day.
